The Mossberg 500 is the only pump shotgun to pass military torture testing and earn a US military contract (the 590A1 variant). Its ambidextrous tang safety β€” positioned at the top rear of the receiver within thumb reach β€” is universally considered superior to the crossbolt safety on competing Remington designs. The aluminum receiver, while sometimes criticized as "weaker," is actually less prone to cracking under firing stress than steel when properly designed.

The 500's twin extractors provide more reliable ejection than the 870's single extractor, and its modular design allows barrel swaps without tools. The 590A1 variant meets MIL-SPEC requirements for the US military and is the gold standard for defensive shotguns. For home defense on any budget, the Mossberg 500 and 590 are the most recommended platforms.
