The Remington 870 is the best-selling shotgun in American history, with over 12 million produced since its introduction in 1950. Its twin action bars (vs single on Winchester 1300) give it the smoothest pump stroke in the category, earning it a reputation for slickness that has made it the standard against which all pump shotguns are measured. It was the standard US military shotgun (M870 MCS) and continues to serve in law enforcement.
Note: Remington's 2020 bankruptcy and subsequent acquisition by Vista Outdoor affected quality control on post-2020 production. Pre-bankruptcy 870s command higher used prices. The 870 faces stiff competition from the Mossberg 500/590 β which has a more durable aluminum receiver vs the 870's steel, and the Mossberg's tang safety is more ergonomic for most shooters. New production quality has reportedly improved under Vista ownership.
