The SIG Sauer P320 became one of the most consequential pistol designs of the 21st century when the US Army selected it as the M17 in 2017, ending a 30-year reign by the Beretta M9. The P320's revolutionary feature is its serialized Fire Control Unit (FCU) β a removable chassis that is the legal firearm. The frame, slide, and barrel are accessories, allowing the same FCU to be reconfigured from compact to full-size to subcompact.
The P320-M17 military variant features a manual thumb safety at the Army's request. The civilian P320 Spectre Comp, with its integrated compensator and optic-ready slide, represents the pinnacle of the platform's development. Despite a high-profile drop-fire incident in 2017 (subsequently addressed via the Voluntary Upgrade Program), the P320 has earned its place as one of the finest striker-fired pistols available.
